West Highland Way – Review

The West Highland Way was not quite what I expected. I had the tour through Lake District last year in mind and expected something similar remote and off civilisation. And more climbing over mountains instead passing on their feet. However, there are some challenging bits like the passage along Loch Lomond or Devil’s Staircase. The detour to Glencoe was definitely worth it and I would even recommend it although the second rest day wasn’t really necessary. If you are an experienced walker and like to face a challenge you can extend the distance of each stage and shorten your trip by 2, 3 days. If you want to have a relaxed hiking holiday 15k each day are perfect. To make it even more enjoyable we might let our luggage transport from place to place. I liked the varieties of accommodation we stayed at (B&Bs, hostels, hotels, camp sites) and the fact that we moved from one to the next. The community on the Way is fantastic, lots of friendly, like-minded hikers and outdoor people and it’s super intersting to hear their stories and experiences. Even going with 3 people worked out fine, despite being an uneven number. All in all a very nice hiking vacation. I could do that every day!
